Neil McIntyre and Mary Ann McLellan: 52 Ancestors #75

I've decided that when I have relatively little information on a couple in my pedigree chart, it makes more sense to write a single sketch for both of them. One such couple is my maternal great-great-grandparents (#26 and #27 in my Ahnentafel), Neil McIntyre and Mary Ann McLellan of Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Neil McIntyre was born 24 Apr 1814 in Barbara Weit, Lot 19, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and was baptized on 8 May 1814 at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in Rustico.¹ He was probably the oldest of six children of Angus McIntyre and Ann "Hanna" Gillis.

In 1840, Neil married Mary Ann McLellan at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Indian River, Lot 18.² Mary Ann was the daughter of Alexander McLellan and Sarah "Sally" McCormick, born on 20 Sep 1817, and baptized on 22 Oct at St. John the Baptist church in Miscouche.³

Neil and Mary Ann had ten children:

In 1861, they were still in Indian River, with eight children in the household.⁴ Rose Ann hadn't been born yet, and there are only three daughters in the 5-16 range, implying that one had died, probably Mary. (It seems somewhat unlikely they would have named two consecutive daughters Mary and Mary Ann unless the first had died. On the other hand, I don't have any definitive information on Sarah or Catherine, either.)

In 1881, the McIntyres lived in Lot 8, PEI, with their two youngest children.⁵ (Rose Ann's future husband, Dominic Murphy, was in the next household enumerated, though it wasn't actually right next door.)⁶

Neil died between 1881 and 1891, when the widowed Mary Ann was living in lot 8 with her youngest son, John;⁷ her youngest daughter, Rose Ann, had married Dominic Murphy 1n 1883. Mary Ann died on 26 Apr 1896 in Hebron, and was buried two days later in St. Mary's Church Cemetery, Brae, Lot 9.⁸

Longevity: Guy Blodgett and Sadie McIsaac - 52 Ancestors, #55

My direct-line ancestors aren't particularly exceptional in their longevity. Some time ago, for a couple of Randy Seaver's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun posts, I looked up ages at death for five generations, and found that my oldest known male ancestor was only 91 – 3rd great-grandfather Jacob Hodsdon (1787-1879), whom I already profiled; among the ladies, two 3rd great-grandmothers were allegedly over 90: Hannah R. (Gould) Green (ca 1787-aft 1879), at about 92, and Sarah (Chamberlain) Brister (ca 1790 - 1881), at about 91, but as you can see, I don't have exact years of birth for either of them, so I can't be sure.

Given this uncertainty and the relatively unimpressive ages involved, for this week's 52 Ancestors prompt of "Longevity" I decided to look for other (non-direct-line) relations for whom I had convincing documentation of demise at over 100.

The oldest male in my database turned out to be a second cousin twice removed named Guy Cleveland Blodgett, who died at the ripe old age of 109. Guy was born 17 January 1885, probably in Dummer, Coos County, New Hampshire, to Nathan Freelan Blodgett and Lillian Rush, the daughter of my 2nd great-grandaunt Hannah Washburn. Although I can't find a New Hampshire birth record for Guy, the birth date – as listed in the SSDI¹ and on his gravestone² – is corroborated by his WWI draft registration³ and is consistent with all census enumerations, including the 1900 census giving his birth as Jan 1885.⁴ His older brother Merlin, is listed in that census with a Jun 1883 birth, which matches his New Hampshire birth record, so it seems highly likely that Guy's Jan 1885 birth is accurate.

Guy married Anna "Annie" Elizabeth Jones on 28 February 1911, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.⁵ They had three children: Freelan, James, and Catherine. Annie died in 1970 at the age of 85, and Guy outlived her by 24 years, dying 28 June 1994 in West Boylston, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.⁶ He and Annie are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Milford, N.H.⁷

Discounting my half  7th great-grandaunt Lucy Hodsdon, who supposedly lived to 115 (her birth date is recorded as "about 1660" in The Descendants of Nicholas Hodsdon-Hodgdon;⁸ I am frankly skeptical), the oldest well-documented female in my database lived to 104. Born 17 April 1904 in Johnville, New Brunswick, Canada, to Gabriel McIsaac and Mary Sutton,⁹ Sarah "Sadie" Rosella McIsaac was my second cousin once removed; Gabriel was the son of my great-grandaunt Hannah McIntyre. Once again I don't actually have a birth record.¹⁰ What I do have is an obituary transcript giving a birth date of 17 May 1904. While clearly not a primary source, it's bolstered by the 1911 census (May 1905, age 6)¹¹ and 1921 census (age 17, implied birth year 1904).¹²

Sadie graduated from the Provincial Normal School and was a schoolteacher.¹³ She married lumberman Sterling Elias Chatterton on 29 November 1929 in Loch Lomond, New Brunswick.¹⁴ (Her given age of 25 on her marriage record again implies a 1904 birth.) They had two children, Fred and Patricia.¹⁵

Sadie died 7 February 2009 and was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery (probably in Loch Lomond).¹⁶

Taking Up the Canada's 150th Genealogy Challenge

Yesterday was Canada Day, and a very special Canada Day at that – the 150th anniversary of Confederation, the creation of the Dominion of Canada from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada (comprising Quebec and Ontario). Patricia Greber of the My Genealogy Life blog celebrated with a Canada's 150th Genealogy Challenge, asking bloggers to "List all your ancestors that were living in Canada in 1867, the dates they arrived (can be approximate) and where they first settled."

So, albeit a day late, I'm going to answer this challenge for the three-quarters of my maternal lines that are Canadian. (My paternal lines are solidly English, Scots, and German.) My maternal grandmother's father descended from French-Canadian stock who first arrived in Quebec in the late 17th century, while my maternal grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Prince Edward Island; his PEI forbears came from Scotland (Outer Hebrides) and Ireland.¹

All except my 3x great-grandfather Michael Murphy were born in Quebec or Prince Edward Island, so for them there are no "arrival dates" or locations "where first settled". Instead I have listed their probable locations in 1867. (Michael Murphy arrived from Ireland ca 1820 and first settled in Georgetown, PEI.)

52 Ancestors: #46, Angus McIntyre, Immigrant From the Outer Hebrides

All the Prince Edward Island ancestors of William George Murphy, my maternal grandfather, emigrated from the British Isles. But while his father's immigrant Murphy ancestor Michael came from Ireland, his mother's McIntyre immigrant ancestor Donald (or possibly his son Angus) arrived on the Island from another island: the Isle of South Uist, near the southern end of Scotland's Outer Hebrides.

The remote Isle of South Uist (or Uibhist a Deas in the Scottish Gaelic tongue) was held by the MacDonalds of Clan Ranald. Following the defeat of the Jacobite armies at the battle of Culloden in 1746, the government began suppressing the Gaelic language and the Catholic religion throughout the Hebrides and the Scottish Highlands, causing many of the Catholic tenant farmers to emigrate to North America. A large proportion of the emigrants from South Uist ended up on what was then known as St. John's Island, a British colony renamed Prince Edward Island in 1798. (Prince Edward Island did not join the Dominion of Canada until 1873.) The major 18th-century immigrations were in 1772 and 1790, though smaller groups arrived at various times between and after those larger groups.

Rose Ann McIntyre's lineage has been traced back to Domhnall Mac An t-Saoir (Donald McIntyre), born about 1745 on South Uist. He married Mairead Domhnallach (Margaret MacDonald), also of South Uist, in say 1770. It's uncertain when they emigrated to P.E.I. – in fact, it's possible that Donald may have died on South Uist before Margaret and their children emigrated, in which case his son Angus would be my immigrant McIntyre ancestor. There is no record of Donald on P.E.I. beyond Margaret's 1851 burial record at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Indian River (Lot 18), P.E.I., in which she was called the widow of Donald McIntyre. If he did in fact emigrate, he must have died before 1798, as he does not appear in a census taken that year.

52 Ancestors: #15, Rose Ann (McIntyre) Murphy

Having previously profiled two great-grandmothers (Kate Maria Rand, mother of my paternal grandmother, and Eva May Woodward, mother of my maternal grandmother), this week I'll look at my my maternal grandfather's mother, Rose Ann McIntyre.

"Grandma Rose" was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, probably in New Annan or Indian River, on 18 Jun 1862, and was baptized eleven days later at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Summerside.¹ Rose was the youngest of ten children of farmer Neil McIntyre and Mary Ann McLellan.

Because Prince Edward Island was not included in the 1871 Canada Census, the first time we see her in the census is 1881, as "Rosina" McIntyre, age 19, still at home with her parents and one older brother in Township 8, Prince County.² Now, I don't usually include neighboring families on my census snippets, but in this case, the next household is significant, because of the last household member listed on the next page of the census enumeration: one Dominic Murphy, age 26 and a labourer on Angus Steele's farm. Rose Ann, at least, found him significant enough to marry him two years later, on 15 Oct 1883, at St. Anthony's Church in Bloomfield, PEI.³

In 1911, all 11 children were still at home.⁴ Over the next three years, the four oldest emigrated to the U.S., settling in Massachusetts (Mary Ann) and in Berlin, New Hampshire (William, John J., and Joseph). Then, in August 1914, Dominic died. After the funeral, the three sons in Berlin encouraged their mother, and their seven brothers and sisters still on the Island, to emigrate as well. The arrangements were made, and on 5 Nov 1914, Rose and her brood crossed the border at Vanceboro, Maine, en route to joining her sons in Berlin.^{5, 6}

There she continued to reign over the Murphy clan as her children grew up and one by one went off and married, till only Bernard was left at home. The photo below shows Rose with a small part of the clan, ca 1923: three of her children (John J., Elizabeth, and Florence), their spouses (Angelina McIntyre, John McGregor, and William Springer, respectively), and four grandchildren.⁷ In 1920 she was still listed as an "Alien" in the census,⁸ but by 1930 she may have become a U.S. citizen⁹ (the census is fuzzy, but it appears to read "NA" for naturalized, though I haven't found any naturalization records for her).

On 15 Feb 1937, Rose died of congestive heart failure,¹⁰ and was buried in Holy Family Cemetery in Gorham, New Hampshire.¹¹

2 Dominic MURPHY. He was born in prob Vernon River, PEI, on 23 Dec 1854. Died on 29 Aug 1914 in Hebron, PEI; he was 59. He was buried in St. Mary's Church Cemetery, Brae, PEI, on 31 Aug 1914. Occupation: Farmer and sawyer.
